In late spring of our first year, John was making a valiant effort to clear out the garden spot in the lower lot we had named the ‘triangle lot’. The garden spot was well fenced, with marvelous river bottom soil. As John worked to remove the ferns, vines and grass from years of neglect, the mail delivery driver drove by and waved. After dropping the mail in the box, she came back around and stopped to say hi.
“Working hard or hardly working?”, she joked.
“There’s a lot to do here!”, John replied.
“Well, at least you’re working in the shade”, she noticed. “See you later”, she said as she pulled away.
It was then that John realized that he had, indeed, been working in the shade all morning.
Shady garden spot.
Not exactly the best place to plant a garden. When the garden spot had first been developed and carefully enclosed with sturdy fencing, the trees were much smaller. But over the years, the trees had grown and now blocked the Sun on both the eastern and western borders of the fenced garden spot.
There have been plenty more realizations over the years of just what we’re dealing with here. Where adjustments need to be made and where we might just need to go back and start over in a whole new direction. Review, repair, rebuild… rethink.
